Abstract The aim of this postgraduate thesis is to investigate the theoretical and empirical influence of teaching two «art-folk» songs to primary school students in grades 4, 5, and 6. The text has been improved to adhere to the following characteristics: objectivity, comprehensibility and logical structure, conventional structure, clear and objective language, format, formal register, structure, balance, precise word choice, and grammatical correctness. No changes in content have been made. This will be achieved through activities based on the curriculum for the music lesson and «poly-artistic» activities. The study employed a literature review to collect information on the importance and role of singing in children's psycho-emotional, social, and educational development. The investigation aimed to identify gaps in the literature on the topic under consideration. Additionally, a qualitative research study was conducted through participatory observation of 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade students at a primary school in Rethymnon. The research sample comprised boys and girls from the aforementioned classes, aged between 8 and 12 years old. Specifically, the study involved activities based on the curriculum and other artistic activities with a focus on learning two Greek «art-folk» songs. The aim was to investigate and record the degree of cognitive, physical, social, and emotional involvement exhibited by the children, as well as the influence on the semiotic systems they choose to use. The study examined the impact of «poly-artistic» activities on children's learning engagement, considering the characteristics of the learning environment (teacher-centred/learner-centred) and the type of learning outcomes (informative/transformative). The results indicated that children who participated in the «poly-artistic» activities experienced a more multi-faceted learning engagement with the taught songs, in a learning environment that had both student-centred and teacher-centred characteristics. On the contrary, the study found that the subject matter was taught both informationally and transformationally. The study found that children who participated in curriculum-based activities had mainly cognitive learning engagement, chose to interact mainly verbally, experienced a learning environment with more teacher-centered characteristics, and approached the taught topic mainly informationally.
