Abstract In this current postgraduate thesis, we attempted to investigate the factors that hinder dialogue in the Social and Political Education lesson of the 3rd Grade of Gymnasium, taught by the educator-researcher, and to explore the possibility of enhancing and improving it. For this purpose, we conducted an action research as the most suitable empirical method that enables educators to explore their own practice and the context in which it is shaped in order to improve it. Our theoretical framework is informed by pedagogical science, sociocultural theories, and the theoretical assumptions of sociology regarding the school class as a social system, part of the broader society. The thematic analysis was the strategy used for analyzing the qualitative data. The students seized the opportunity given to them to speak about their experiences, highlighting the school to a large extent as an anti-dialogical, regulatory, and authoritarian institution that is not interested in hearing what they really say and want. It was proven that cultivating dialogue cannot be achieved with a set of practices explicitly dedicated to this purpose. Dialogue in education should function as a spontaneous process, without spatial and temporal constraints, in an open, democratic framework that respects everyone's opinions and encourages free exchange of views. Thus, the nature of action research as a lively, participatory process led us through critical reflection to new considerations and directed our interest towards discussing the prerequisites for dialogue in the broader school community.
