Abstract |
The current thesis focuses on Greek as a foreign language and in particular on its learning by adult speakers with L1 Italian, compared with other L1s. Specifically, we study phenomena of internal agreement and grammatical categories (gender, case, number), adverbial accusative, as well as verbs and adverbs with a prepositional phrase as complement. Taking as a condition the distinction between L1 and the target language (L2) we intend to highlight the role of speakers’ L1 through their errors. Noticing that subjects with L1 Italian do present better performance systematically, we try to figure out the extent to which L1 intervenes in the learning process. Our hypothesis is that there is an interference of L1 which decreases as we move on to higher language levels. Thus, we expect an indirect access to L2, through L1 Italian, which appears to be more intensive at the beginners’ level, and regards the structures in question. The results of Italian speakers confirm the assumption made above.
To control the probable interference of L1 and following up from previous researches on the internal agreement, we examined Italian adults’ performances, as well as those of speakers with other L1s, through a) a questionnaire and b) learners’ essays, all graded according to beginner and intermediate level. The methods used were selected to compare the extent to which closed-type activities (e.g. questionnaire) or essays affect subjects’ performance. Results revealed that performance is affected by the activity type as students seem to be more cautious, and, as a result, more correct, during closed-type activities.
