Abstract Introduction: Schools are the ideal setting for the transmission of knowledge regarding health issues among children and their parents. Moreover, ensuring the physical and mental health of children is a necessary priority of schools. Schools favor the application of fast and low cost interventions against a great number of diseases. As the agglomeration of children in school settings increases the possibility of communicable disease transmission, school stuff must be aware of certain infection control measures. The main role of school prevention lies within the teachers, who spend a lot of hours with their students in a daily basis. Purpose of the research: The main purpose of this research is to evaluate the knowledge of primary school teachers in Rhodes, regarding the basic rules of hygiene, the transmission of communicable diseases and the exclusion periods from school as a mean of prevention. Methods: The target population of this research was all the primary school teachers who work in the public primary schools of Rhodes, which subject in the primary education directorate of Dodecanese. A Closed type anonymous questionnaire was used and was distributed amongst teachers. The questions included in the questionnaire focused on topics such as hygiene, transmission of communicable diseases and exclusion periods from school for disease control. Also, a question regarding school infrastructure for disease control was included. Teacher’s knowledge was calculated as the sum of correct answers and was expressed in the form of average and standard deviation. The analysis of data was performed using the EXCEL 365 calculation sheet. Margin of error was set to 0,05. Results: Of the 521 teachers (specialties included) that work in primary schools in Rhodes, Greece, 482 took part in the study (participation rate 92,5%). In 2 of the 3 questions regarding hygiene, the correct answers exceeded 90%. A lack of knowledge was observed in questions regarding head lice, common cold as well as in questions regarding disease transmission. A tendency of more correct answers was observed in higher age groups. The age group 20-29 had the lower correct response rating (6.0±1.5), whilst the higher correct response rating was attributed to the age group of 50+ (7.1±1.5). The differences between age groups are statistically significant (p<0.001) while a statistically significant correlation was noted between age group and correct answer rating (r=0.997, p<0.001). Regarding the knowledge for the existence of a specified school infrastructure to prevent communicable diseases, the age group 50+ had the higher rating of correct answers (p<0.001). Conclusions: Primary school teachers can contribute substantially in making schools safe for students’ health. While there was a good response rate in most of the questions asked, a lack of knowledge was observed in certain topics. The high participation rate in this research shows an increased interest for communicable diseases on the teachers’ side. The findings of this research could be used for the creation of educational programs, targeted towards the educators and they can also be used for the creation of better infrastructures for the prevention of communicable diseases in school settings.
