Abstract |
The present study attempts to investigate the degree of awareness of teachers regarding the strengthening of resilience in the school community, in combination with their experiences around school bullying. More specifically, the research focuses on examining teachers' experiences and perceptions of (a) tackling school bullying, (b) cooperating with other members of the school community, (c) risk factors associated with school bullying phenomena and (d) fostering resilience in the school community. In order to study the above questions, we relied on the theoretical model of Henderson & Milstein (2008). According to this theory, the strengthening of resilience in the school context includes the following dimensions: the development of emotional bonds, clear demarcation, the provision of care and support, the learning of life skills and the provision of opportunities for effective participation in school life. The above dimensions are assessed at student, teacher and school level. At the same time, the present work focuses on the social context of school bullying and specifically on the investigation of social factors, such as prevention against antisocial behaviors, and cooperation between members of the school community to promote students' social behaviors. The sample of the study consists of 142 primary and secondary teachers who, due to restrictive measures against the covid-19 pandemic, fulfilled a questionnaire in electronic form (googleform), based on the tool for promoting resilience in school community that is proposed by Henderson & Milstein (2008). The data analysis showed that the teachers, who collaborated with others and faced incidents of school bullying, believe that there is a need of empowerment of resilience at the level of teachers, students and school. It also showed that teachers who perceive the importance of social factors in the manifestation of school bullying, such as lack of prevention and information and the existence of antisocial attitudes, express the need for serious efforts to foster resilience in the school community.
