Abstract |
Distance Learning is a dynamic entity in the field of education. It has its own rules and it
is a framework for adult education programs. This thesis examines, through the review of
the literature, the compatibility of distance education with the use of Mezirow’s
transformative learning. Also deals with the conditions for applying his theory to online
education. In the meantime is seeking for applied innovative practices of applying this
theory to distance learning programs for adults. At a later stage, and taking into account
the results of previous research of literature and especially ancient tragedy as a literary
work of great value explores the conditions for the application of this theory to the
teaching of an ancient tragedy or through it. Literature review has shown that the
environment of the distance learning is an ideal case for applying the theory of
transformative learning. Specific in adult education programs for successful use in online
learning it is sufficient to enrich it with the qualities of adult education. Distance learning
provides a framework for thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking. Although a
multidimensional process, it is sufficient to follow its basic principles, such as interaction,
learner- centered character, trustful relationships and the distinctness of roles. Literacy
review has proved that ancient tragedy is the scope of this theory. Five educational
teaching scenarios were presented using the theory of transformative learning in the
Aeschylus’ Persians tragedy through selected themes. Four of them refer to the teaching of
specific issues that arise from this tragedy, while the fifth relates to journalism and more
specifically to research and selection of news. This thesis mentions future directions
aspects for further research on the negotiated issues.
