Abstract |
The object of this work is the way in which refugees are presented as a threat, especially by people who are close to the political space of the far right in an effort to mobilize the natives in Greece to take action against the refugees. The identities that are mobilized and the other means of influence that are employed in this effort are examined in particular, as well as the strategies of delegitimization of the refugees themselves. The work is theoretically based on concepts from the sociopsychological literature of social identity, such as identity enterprenteur (Reicher 2013) and the politicized collective identity of Simon and Klandermans (2013), as well as Bar-Tal's theory of decriminalization (1990). For research purposes, material was collected from the social networking page Facebook, while the thematic analysis was chosen as the method for the analysis. The research questions posed by the present research in this context, in relation to the users of social media that move in the far right political space, concern a) the collective identities they mobilize when they succeed against immigrants, b) the ways in which they attempt to involve the population in relation to their goals and c) the ways in which they present refugees , in their attempt to construct the immigration issue as a "threat". The thematic analysis of our first research question produced three main categories (topics) regarding the identities that were mobilized by the users, to address a wider audience: as Cretans, as Greeks and as a people. As for the second question, the main way of involving the population was to invent a common, "internal" or "external" enemy, in addition to refugees / immigrants, such as political and state actors, the EU. etc. Finally, with regard to the 3rd research question, most of the delegitimization strategies proposed by Bar Tal (1989) were identified as means of constructing the "threat" represented by refugees according to far-right rhetoric.
