Abstract |
During the last years the atmosphere in the Greater Athens Area and other cities is burdened with pollutants due to extended residential biomass burning for heating purposes . In this work, the impact of wood burning combustion on the air quality of Athens is examined. Intensive measurements of aerosols and associated water –soluble ionic, carbonaceous and organic species were conduced in the center of Athens (Thissio, at the facilities of the National Observatory of Athens) during winter 2013-2014 with the use of different techniques for the estimation of contribution from each source (traffic, biomass burning, natural sources etc).
Cationic composition of particulate matter (Na+, K+, NH4+,Mg +2, Ca+2) was measured by using a Particle-Into-Liquid-Sampler coupled with an Ion Chromatography (PILS-IC). Biomass burning tracers such as non-seasalt potassium, black carbon (wood burning), and levoglucosan were compared in relation to each other in order to evaluate the contribution of wood burning to air pollution. Strong correlations between biomass burning tracers as well as between chloride measured by ACSM provide information about the type of material and wood being burned. All data are analysed in relation to meteorological parameters (temperature, precipitation, wind velocity) in order to investigate the sources and factors affecting particulate pollution from wood burning. Elevated levels of most chemical species were observed especially at nighttime during biomass burning episodes, characterized by dramatic build-up of the biomass burning tracers when the prevailing meteorological conditions did not favor dispersion and deposition mechanisms (low wind speed, no precipitation). While Ca+2 and Mg+2 presented higher concentrations during the period characterized by high dispersion and air masses coming from the north and west sector, indicating contribution from natural sources (dust and sea salt respectively).
