Abstract AIM: The aim of this study is to measure the incidence of hip fracture, types of hip fractures, types of surgical procedures and to estimate the direct cost of hospitalization of these patients at Venizelio General Hospital of Heraklion. MATERIAL - METHOD: This is a retrospective study in which data were collected from 537 male and female patients diagnosed with a hip fracture coded ICD 10 S72,0-S72,1-S72,2 and age >=65 years. These patients underwent hip fracture surgery at Venizelio General Hospital of Heraklion from 1 January 2013 until 31 December 2014. The data was collected from hospital records and followed by a similar statistical analysis. RESULTS: Most of the patients with hip fracture were women (81.1%) vs. males (18.9%) and (54%) of the population were in the 80-90 age group with mean age of 84 ± 7.4 years. The most frequent fracture diagnosis was the intertrohanteric fracture coded S72.1 in 57.2% of patients. For the years 2013 and 2014, a total of 537 patients were identified. Mean direct cost was 2,846 € (± 1,177) in a total of 537 patients, and there was a difference between the cost of hospitalization based on DRGs. The pre-operative length of stay for the period of the study was mean2.4 (± 2.0) days. The total length of stay in the hospital was 10.1 (± 4.3) days for the period of the study. The patients hospitalized 11.1 (± 4.8) days in 2013 vs. to 9 (± 3, 4) in2014. CONCLUSIONS: A significant number of elderly patients with hip fractures were operated in the years 2013-2014. The total length of stay in the hospital is a determinant factor for the cost estimation. Achieving a reduction in pre-operative hospitalization and total length of stay may reduce costs. Also, the indicated choice of surgical method can save resources for hospitals. It seems important to have an interdisciplinary management team of geriatric patients for faster and safer treatment according to international literature.
