Title Εκτίμηση αναγκών υγείας ογκολογικών ασθενών για τη διαμόρφωση προτύπων στη νοσηλευτική φροντίδα τους
Alternative Title Assessment of the health needs of cancer patients for formulating standards
Creator Konstantinidis, Theoharis
Abstract The aim of the study was the documentation of the health needs of cancer patients and the measurement of the degree of satisfaction of care in their clinical setting, in two big general hospitals in Crete, Greece. 140 patients (69 men and 71 women) were selected with random sampling, average age 62 years, in March 2005 and the Needs Evaluation Questionnaire was used. The main group of needs was informational, concerning their future condition (71%), more explanations on treatments (61%) and more information about exams they were undergoing (59%). The second group of needs concerned the patient – family relations (49%). The least reported needs were; to talk with a priest (16%), psychologist (22%) and the need for more assistance in daily activities (16%). The patients reported satisfaction from the nursing staff care (78%). Women in comparison with men were reported to have significantly more need for financial help (42 to 27%, p<0.05) and more need to feel less abandoned to their selves (61 to 32%, p<0.05). The need for “more respect to my intimacy” decreased significantly as the period from initial diagnosis increased (from 50% at 0-3 months to 16% at >60, p<0.05) and as the distance from the hospital to their home increased (from 43% in patients living <5km from the hospital to 11% in those > 250 km away, p<0.05). In a separate question concerning the degree of cancer patients’ satisfaction in the two hospitals, the total score was found 8.6 out of 10, while no significant difference was found in the grade of satisfaction according to the sex, age, education, distance from residence and evidence of metastasis. Generally, a great number of unmet needs was found in cancer patients in Crete, although this fact didn’t influence the degree of satisfaction with care in the clinical setting. Further studies are required to document the existing health services and the interventions needed to improve the present condition.
