Abstract	Out of the 36 chiroptera species found in Greece, 30 have been found on an island. Among the findings great heterogeneity can be found in both the sampling effort and the number of species per island. This study aims to fill in the knowledge gaps regarding the Sporades island cluster by means of sufficient field work, as well as to distinguish patterns behind species richness on islands using possible predictor variables. In the analysis, chiroptera species richness data from fieldwork carried out in this study was used, as well as pre-existing data extracted from the Natural History Museum of Crete Database on Chiroptera of Greece. The predictor variables that were used fit into 3 categories: island area, landscape variety and island isolation. In order to find the parameters that best explain bat species richness in the islands studied, linear regression models were used. Analysis and evaluation of the models demonstrated tree cover and the distance between the islands and their nearest coast (mainland or island) to be the most important predictor variables. The results of this study highlight the important role of landscape composition and isolation in the distribution of bat species on islands, prompting new studies to take advantage of more factors, other than that of the island’s area. At the same time, the importance of forest habitats is highlighted, encouraging their management and protection, especially in the insular systems of the Mediterranean basin where the risk of their degradation (e.g. due to wildfire) is high.
