Abstract The choice of medical specialty is a critical point in the career of any Medical graduate, which is influenced by a number of social, economic and personal factors. PURPOSE: The purpose of this research is to study the factors and possible motivations that contribute to the selection of General Medicine by young doctors in Greece, while analyzing the potential contributions of this specialty in particular to the health needs of today. METHOD: To conduct the research, a suitable questionnaire was created in digital form, which included open and closed type questions concerning various factors related to the final choice of medical specialty and at the same time highlighting the general profile of General Practice trainees/specialists. MATERIAL: The material of the study was the answers of a random sample of 38 General Practice trainees/specialists from hospitals of Iraklion, Crete and Thessaloniki (PA.G.N.I., G.N.Venizelio and G.N. Papageorgiou, G.N.TH. Ippokratio). RESULTS: The study indicated that the majority of physicians participating in the survey decided to pursue a specialty in General Practice in the province, focusing primarily on direct contact with patients, then on good professional prospects and interesting scientific subject. Although the findings of various relevant studies are not easily comparable, the investigation of General Practice selection factors as a specialty by young physicians is an important "tool" for designing health policies and introducing incentives for health manpower development.
