Abstract Phosphonate and metal phosphonate compounds have drawn a lot of attention, not only due to their structural architectures, but also because of their applications in a wide range of everyday life. Their use ranges from ingredients in toothpastes and antiosteoporotic drugs, to additives for water treatment and the protection of metal surfaces in industry to protect them from corrosion. This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, the goal was the synthesis and characterization of new metal phosphonate compounds. The phosphonic acids used were Pamidronate, Alendronate, Neridronate, Risedronate, C3BP and C5BP, while the metal centers used were La3+, Nd3+, Ce3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Sm3+, Gd3+ and Dy3+. Physicochemical characterization of the new compounds was achieved by IR, PXRD and SEM, where necessary. Finally, the structures of each compound were determined by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The resulting metal phosphonate compounds were either complexes (0D), or one-dimensional (1D), and multi-dimensional (2D, 3D) coordination polymers. In the second part of the thesis, the application of the modified bisphosphonic acids Alendronate, Neridronate, and their analogs C3BP and C5BP in the protection of metal surfaces from corrosion was evaluated. More specifically, the effects of the size of the alkyl side chain and the presence (or absence) of an amino group on the anticorrosive performance of these bisphosphonates were studied. The solution pH values were 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 and the concentrations of inhibitor were 0.01 mM, 0.10 mM and 1.00 mM.
