Abstract The primary objective of this thesis is to study the phenomenon of loss induced transparency in quantum optical systems. More specifically, we consider the single and two photon propagation in coupled dissipative optical waveguides. Such a coupled system is characterized by passive parity-time symmetry and exhibits an exceptional point. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the development of numerical methods for open quantum systems, such as the Lindblad master equation and the quantum Monte-Carlo method. These methods are compared and validated in well-known prototypical quantum systems, such as Jaynes-Cummings coupled cavities, where the effect of dissipation is examined. The second part of this thesis, is related to the application of such methods, in two coupled waveguide channels (only one with dissipation) where the excitation is that of single or double photons. Our results regarding the loss induced transparency effect are presented in the quantum regime.
