Abstract Mitochondria are very important organelles for the cells as they perform procedures that are necessary for life. One of them is oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), in which four complexes of electron transport chain and F1-F0 ATP synthase take part. F1-F0 ATP synthase is the enzyme that catalyzes the final step of the procedure, the production of the energy molecule ATP. This enzyme is found in dimeric/oligomeric forms in mitochondria. Especially in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the enzyme consists of 17 well-characterized subunits, some encoded by mitochondrial DNA in the matrix of mitochondria and others encoded by the nucleus. Those encoded by the nucleus are imported in the organelles via specific sorting pathways leading the proteins to the mitochondrial subcompartments. Subunit e (Tim11) is encoded by the nucleus and is found anchored in the inner membrane of mitochondria. It is considered as an important subunit responsible for the dimerization of the ATPase and for the cristae formation inside mitochondria. Tim11’s aminoacid sequence doesn’t seem to have a known peptide signal which leads precursor proteins to the inner membrane of mitochondria and thus the study of Tim11’s import and association with the inner membrane was considered to perhaps enrich the database of peptide signals or even lead to the identification of a new import pathway to the inner membrane.
