Abstract The causes of infertility and sterility have been on a constant increase not only in Europe, but also worldwide. The prevalence of infertile couples is on raise and medical science has been developed in order to contribute to its decrease. The technologies of assisted reproduction (ART) are quite a few and the right choice depends on the special features of the couple. Technologies of assisted reproduction could be separated into three major categories. There are those techniques that require medication in order to restore fertility levels and those methods that include surgical intervention in order to heal and treat the problematic area in genitals on both men and women. Last but not least there are also those techniques that are more alternative in a sort way such as surrogate motherhood and sperm-egg donation, which are also a way to have a child. The first two categories include only genetic material from the couple in interest, whereas the last one includes those cases where the gametes of couple cannot be used. Education plays an important role on ART, due to the fact that it could shape the public perception on that matter. That means that the choice on assisted reproduction could be affected by social, economical, psychological and personal factors. Knowledge and education are being included into them since the lack of those two could lead into rushing decisions. Only when a person or a couple knows the full spectrum on a matter is able to take the right and integrated decision. The main goal of this current study was to evaluate the knowledge and beliefs of the island Kasos population on infertility and ART matters. The population age group was between 18 to 60 years old in the island Kasos, where the investigator asked them to answer a questionnaire. The questionnaire was a combination of two partial questionnaires. The first one was about the quality of life and fertility and the second one was about the current knowledge on ART. Every statistical control was performed with a 5% level of significance. SPSS v.22 was used for statistical analysis. 150 individuals agreed to participate in the study. The research of medical help for infertility on the actual ART treatment and the availability of having a child were characterized as taboo themes. However, it is remarkable that this opinion is still there even though a 30% of the population had experienced an infertility case once in their lives either personaly or as regarded their relatives. Even though this was a completely inconvenient topic to discuss, 90% of the population had a positive view on ART. Furthermore, the majority of population was well aware of each ART method. The results on the knowledge of ART could be easily characterized as adequate at this point. Surely, further enhancement by health education programs could be proved more efficient in the future.
