Abstract This work is the subject of my Master’s thesis which was conducted at the PPM (Photonic-, Phononic- and Meta-Materials) group of FORTH-IESL. In the general area of electromagnetic metamaterials, metasurfaces, which are the 2D version of metamaterials, recently became of interest in the scientific community, mainly because of their relative low-loss in contrast to their 3D predecessors. Metasurfaces count a number of different potential applications. This work revolves, mainly, around their polarization transformations feature. Specifically, theoretical research tools are used (simulation software and programming platforms) in order to study and understand the response of different microstructures to electromagnetic radiation. Starting from simple structures we move on to more geometrically complex structures in search of good results about the cross-polarized reflection that we wish our structures to feature. In general, promising results are found but there is still space for optimizing this work furthermore.
