Abstract In the present work, the employment of a new oxime ligand H2nic, in NiII and NiII/LnIII chemistry was investigated. Herein, we managed to isolate a homometallic [Ni3 (Hnic) 2 (acac) 4 (MeOH) 2](MeOH)3 (1•3MeOH) cluster and a new family of heterometallic NiII/LnIII complexes [Ni2Ln 2 (Hnic) 2 (nicO) 2 (acac) 4 (H 2O) 2](NO 3) 2 (MeOH) 8 (H 2O) 4 (2•2NO 3•8MeOH•4H2O) (Ln: La (2), Pr (3), Sm (4), Gd (5), Tb (6), Dy (7), Ho (8), Er (9) και Y (10)). The characterization of these complexes was made by means of single - crystal X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). In addition, we investigated their magnetic properties in detail performing magnetic susceptibility measurements under dc applied field of 1000 G in the 5 - 300 K temperature range, and magnetic susceptibility measurements under ac applied field of 3.5 G in temperature and frequency range of 2 - 8 K and 200 - 1000 Hz, respectively. The analysis of the ac measurements, showed that the complex 7 displays slow relaxation of magnetization and, thus, Single Molecule Magnet behavior. Furthermore, reduced magnetization measurements were carried out for complex 5, under magnetic field of 0.5 - 7 T and temperature range of 2 - 7 K. Finally we investigated the solid - state optical properties of the clusters. It was found that the complexes 6, 7 and the ligand, emit blue light in the 450 - 470 nm range.
