Abstract Students from a different linguistic and cultural background at Greek schools have linguistic needs which entail their teachers’ special attention. The communicative fluency of bilingual students who have lived in Greece for some years does not equate to an overall linguistic competence. On the contrary, school subjects demand the development of the students’ academic language proficiency, a task requiring systematic effort and time (Cummins, 2000: 76). Particularly the academic vocabulary encountered in all school textbooks is one of the primary challenges of bilingual students (Stahl & Nagy, 2006:6). The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of incorporating explicit academic vocabulary teaching in history classes on the linguistic development of bilingual primary school students. The sample consisted of five fourth-grade bilingual students at a mainstream primary school class in Chania, Crete. For the conduction of this study, history class instructions were designed based on the Content-based Instruction (CBI) approach for language teaching. The research design consisted of ten history instructions, of which five were ‘simple’ instructions (delivered by the class teacher) and five were ‘experimental’ instructions incorporating vocabulary teaching (delivered by the researcher). Before the beginning and after the completion of the experiment the vocabulary level of the participants was assessed using parametric and non-parametric tests. Data analysis showed that the results of the experimental interventions differentiated between students of different levels of language proficiency in their L2, offering greater benefits to bilingual students with higher levels of linguistic proficiency compared to those with lower levels of language proficiency.
