Abstract Introduction: Primary Health Care (PHC) is known to be an important setting for supporting cessation among patient who smoke however not all patients are ready to quit smoking. The purpose of this postgraduate dissertation was to examine factors that are associated with respondent’s readiness to quit smoking for tobacco users who were identified in a sample of PHC services in Greece. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was performed from June to September 2015 in 15 Primary Care clinics who are part of the Primary Care Research Network of the University of Crete (Heraklion, Crete, Greece). Consecutive patients were screened for their smoking status as part of their visit to PHC clinics. A total of 1059 patients were screened of which 524 eligible tobacco users agreed to participate in the study. Respondents characteristics were reported using chi-square and t-tests and and multiple logistic regression was used to examine predictors of readiness to quit smoking. Results: The smoking prevalence in the subject population was estimated to be 38%. Fourteen point nine percent of smokers reported suffering from anxiety and/or depression symptoms. 70.6% of the patients reported smoking within the first 30 minutes after waking up. While 67.7% had made no effort to quit smoking in the previous year, the majority of smokers however showed interest in quitting smoking within the next 6 months and 24.6% within the next 30 days. Quit intention was positively associated with a history of previous smoking cessation attempts [1-2 tries: (OR 5.10, 95% CI 3.10- 8.40) and >3 tries: (OR 7.57, 95% CI 2.96-19.37)], low daily cigarette consumption (OR 0.05, 95% CI 0.01-0.51) and the perceived importance of cessation (OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.45-2.00) and a positive screening for depression (OR 2.29, 95% CI 1.13-4,62). Conclusions: The results of this study indicate key factors related to the intent to quit smoking among adults in primary health care settings. Findings may assist with identifying targets for planning interventions and educational programs to increase readiness to quit amongst patients and assist PHC professionals’ in understanding the unique needs of their patients who smoke based on their readiness to quit.
