Abstract

In the present study, it is examined the example of National Charity Institutions, the main and unique nursing unit of Greek orthodox community of Constantinople at the time interval 1862-1914. It is important for us to report that, the NCI are constituted by a number of charity institutions that include hospital, mental hospital, nursing home and orphanage, and are managed by an elected body “Ephoria” which is constituted by distinguished members of the community. In a season with abundance of socio-political changes and permanent realignments while the medicine does swift progress, the examination of organisational, administrative and scientific development of nursing institution which is located in Constantinople of 19th century, presents particular interest. After apposition of elements such as demographic, finances, policies, and historical facts, that delimit the season of study, the historical development of NCI is examined from different viewpoints. The main levels of examination of charity institutions at the duration of the 52 years of our study are distinguished in certain fundamental axes as the Organisational Structure and Management, the legislative frame, the economic management, the crewing and the operation of institutions but also the medical research. Objective of our work is the examination of the administrative and organisational changes but also the continuous development and extension of institutions. Subjects with regard to the annual economic balance-sheets, the personnel, the operation of hospital and rests of institutions are analyzed extensively through diagrammatic representation, while photographic and archival material is mentioned in the annex that follows at the end of this paper.
