Abstract The World Wide Web is evolving into a medium that will soon make it possible for conceiving and implementing location aware services. Some of the services that are provided by the World Wide Web, are of general interest, like the stock market, and other services are mainly targeted to users in a specific geographical place, like restaurants, theaters, weather e.t.c. . The rapid development of wireless networks, mobile computers and mobile telephony allows users to make use of various services from any location. In the last years, there is a significant development in the field of mobile services that, through the use of mobile devices like mobile computers and mobile telephones, gives the possibility to users to access services that are aware of users context (geographical position, personalized access options e.t.c.). Location aware information retrieval systems, implement the idea of locating the user by using location-sensing systems (like GPS e.t.c.) and then filtering the information based on the detected geographical position of the user. Acknowledging the need for providing services that are aware of the user’s geographical location, we developed a system that filters the available services in relation to the user’s interest as well as to his location when using the system. A fundamental component for developing systems that are aware of the user’s geographical location is that of location modeling. For this purpose, we present a geographical ontology, which uses the Resource Description Framework (RDF). Additionally, we present schemas to describe the location by making use of the RDF/S and their encoding by XML language. In order to detect the user’s location our system uses the IP address through which the user accesses the system. Any location sensing system could be used for detecting the user’s location. Therefore, in order to efficiently evaluate and select such a system, we present their characteristics. Another fundamental component of location aware systems is that of processing Location Dependent Queries. The system that we developed includes a mechanism for processing queries that are location dependent and provides location aware services to the user.
