Abstract |
In the present work a box model was created for the estimate of halogens importance in the photochemistry of marine boundary layer (MBL). For this aim, we used the form of reactions, described by Sander and Crutzen (1996). We simulated two different scenarios. The effect of halogens in the photochemistry of MBL is obvious in both scenarios. The rate of ozone destruction, by the halogens, is around 1 ppb/day in both studied cases and is similar to that calculated by Vogt et al (1999) (0.9 ppb/day). Therefore, the halogen chemistry in the marine lower troposphere is important for the accurate description of the processes that take place. The first scenario, in which we did not have import of pollutants from emissions or transport of air masses during the simulation, gave us a clue for the importance of transport phenomena observed in the region of Finokalia. Kouvarakis et al (2000) showed that the local emissions are negligible and that the main role in the budget of O3, is played by the transport of pollutants from long dinstances. With this scenario we have a picture of the concetration levels of various compounds if no transport phenomena occur. Furthermore, we can appreciate the size of transport of each pollutant comparing the results of this scenario with the measurements at Filokalia.
