Abstract

The study reports on the use of lithotripsy services of extracorporeal lithotripsy (ESWL) for lithiasis of urinary system in a hospital located in the largest area of Athens. All medical records available in the database of Sismanoglio Hospital of Athens were reviewed and data on gender, age, residency and stone’s location were analysed using a SPSS 14.0 version. Only data between 1999 to 2003 were included. 14,147 patients (mean age: 45 years old, age range 6 to 92 years old) were identified (8,094 men and 6,053 women). The ratio male/female patients regarding the number of lithotripsys, was found 1.35, lower that reported in the literature. The mean age of patients were 45 years old (age range: 6 to 92 years old). The age group 40 - 54 years old made the greater use of those services. Despite of the methological concerns study, it contributes to the current debate on the lithiasis’ frequency in our country and the use of lithotripsy services.
