Abstract Accounts of the future of the welfare state are often presented in crisis terms. Some commentators identify globalization as a force that has already led to a major retreat by the state and is likely to lead to further downsizing of the public sector. The only way Western societies can lessen the future impact of the ongoing cultural transformation of the labor market is through the redesign of welfare state institutions to confront poverty, social exclusion, unemployment e.t.c. The extended crisis of the welfare state led to the arise of a new alternative economy most known as Third Sector or Social Solidarity. The third sector is defined as the sector between the State and the Market and it includes social enterprises with non-profit character. Promptly combined with the development of Social Solidarity is the appearance of small communities around the world which are self-organised and aim to economic selfsufficiency with respect to nature. These communities are formed consciously and have chosen an alternative social organization from the dominant one, to a sustainable direction. The intentional Communities, as they called, include various types of such societies which are coordinated by the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN).This Network is a growing network of sustainable communities and initiatives that bridge different cultures, countries, and continents. GEN serves as umbrella organization for eco-villages, transition town initiatives, intentional communities, and ecologically-minded individuals worldwide. Parallel with this sustainable development an alternative type of tourism has also appeared: eco-tourism. My interesting concerning the existence of communities towards a sustainable development , motivated me to search the Greek reality for such communities. My research includes two empirical examples: the settlement of Milia and the non-profit enterprise Vamos A.E. in Crete. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the structure and function of these enterprises and to reveal whether these case studies can be incorporated to the wider dialogue about Social Solidarity, Intentional Communities, Eco-tourism or not. The method used in the survey is 7 the ethnographic research. Ethnography is a qualitative research method used usually to describe a culture. Data collection was done through participant observation and in depth-interviews. Keywords: Social Solidarity, Intentional Communities, Eco-village, Ecotourism, Ethnographic research.
