Abstract The aim of this work was to study the antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidative properties of a series of essential oils. In specific we determined the classification of the essential oils regarding these properties. At first, the method of the antibiogram is used, meaning the determination of the antibacterial and antifungal properties by using the disc diffusion assay and the formation of zones of inhibition. This method is being used in several microbiological laboratories and is composed of a modification of the known method Bauer-Kirby. In this technique instead of using already prepared discs of antibiotics we use sterile discs that are being soaked with the essential oils under examination. The results of this method revealed a dominance of thyme as the best antibacterial and antifungal, while oils such as ylang-ylang and ginger showed minimum antimicrobial activity. The rest of the essential oils were in between. As far as the antioxidative properties were concerned a spectrophotometric method of bleaching of a purple-coloured methanol solution of DPPH was applied. The ability of the essential oils to bind several harmful free radicals was assessed based on this method. Finally, thyme proved to be the most potent essential oil in this assay, while tea tree, ylang-ylang, ginger and rosewood also ranked high.
