Abstract

The present task aims at the study of the social and cultural formation of the fan identities of the sports associations of the Pan-Thessaloniki Athletic Club of Constantinopolitans (hereinafter referred to as PAOK), Aris, Heracles, and Apollon of Kalamaria, which act within the urban area of Thessaloniki. The discursive and expressive practices of the fan communities constitute a privileged field of study and understanding of the process of composition of the identity of locality, and bring to the surface different socio-cultural aspects and perceptions. The work is based on the selective overview of the greek and international literature on the issues of fan identities and utilizes the findings of the field study in Thessaloniki, which includes gathering, sorting and analyzing primary research material: interviews with fans, fan banners, graffiti and announcements made by organized associations. The study initially focuses on the fan dichotomous dipole “Aris- PAOK”, a rivalry which has historically had strong social connotations, namely the opposition between the indigenous and the refugees or between the noble and the folk and is accompanied by intense spatial conflicts and symbolic violence manifestations. Next, the study examines the case of Heracles' team, which attempts to establish a third fan pole through discourse that defends movement actions and an identity of resistance against the hegemonic fan collectives in the city. Finally, reference is made to the fan identity of Apollon of Kalamaria, which is established on a strictly ethnic basis with strong historical references and selects policies of cultural differentiation from other collectives, away from the logic of a conflictual fan polarization.
