Abstract |
The study aims is to investigate the dog’s role as a reservoir of pathogens
transmitted by ticks and to present epidemiological data in Greece. The subject of the
thesis is covered by the review of the international literature, which presents and
analyzes issues related to ticks and their biological structure, their geographical
dispersion and the way of habitat of the host. Analytical data are also presented on the
most important tick-borne diseases present in Greece, which are anaplasmosis,
erlichiasis, babesiosis and rickettsiosis. For every tick-borne disease, there are data on
the clinical picture of the disease in the dog and secondarily in humans, the diagnosis
methods and the treatment. Finally, epidemiological data on tick-borne diseases in
Greece, as well as methods for the prevention of ticks are recorded and presented. The
analysis shows that existing epidemiological data are quite limited in our country.
Only one recent research has shown that the most common type of tick that is found
in dogs in Greece is Rhipicephalus sanguineus (s.l.). with its most common
pathogens, are those of rickets and hepatozoonosis. Other research has also identified
pathogens that are mainly associated with rickets and anaplasmosis, but most of these
have been done in northern Greece. In order to enrich this data, more epidemiological
research is needed to be done in Greece.
