Abstract Introduction: Mental health disorders in children and adolescents are a growing public health problem in developed countries. The urgent psychiatric conditions of children and adolescents have increased significantly in recent years, but this phenomenon has not been studied in detail. In Greece, epidemiological data on psychiatric conditions of children and adolescents hospitalized in Pediatric Psychiatric Departments are limited. The aim: To record and analyze the detailed demographic, social, psychopathological and clinical characteristics of children and adolescents hospitalized in the Pediatric Psychiatric Clinic (PPC) of the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI). To assess the prevalence and frequency of known psychiatric disorders and emergencies in this population sample, and to investigate various family, social, clinical, and interventional factors related to them. Material and Method: This is a retrospective study that took place at the Pediatric Psychiatric Department of PAGNI. The sample consisted of all children and adolescents (n = 152) who had emergency hospitalizations (n = 249) from 1/2/2015 to 30/9/2018. Results: Of the total hospitalizations in the clinic, 61% concerned first admissions, 39% related to re-admissions. The mean age of the patients was 15.2 ± 2 years (girls/boys 107/45). Male patients at a significantly higher (p <0.01) percent were admitted to the PPC following a public prosecution order. Frequent reasons for admission were attempted suicide (26%) and other forms of suicide (32%). The reasons for admission to Pediatric Psychiatric Clinic varied by gender with more than half of the cases involving girls suicide attempt and other forms of suicide in boys, incidence of behavioral disorders and psychosis. Problems with families and friends were associated with higher attempt rates (50%) than those of other recent psychopoietic events (13-30%). A large proportion of patients hospitalized in the Pediatric Psychiatric Clinic had shown suicidal behavior (53.6%). Overdose (58.33%), drops from height (13.33%) and poisoning with toxic agents such as detergents (6.67%) were recorded as the main means of suicide in the study population. The most common diagnosis of ICD outcome was emotional disturbances (36.69%) and emotional and behavioral disorders beginning with childhood or adolescence (17.34%). Conclusion: Our results overlap with the global trend of psychiatric illness increase in children and adolescents, suggesting as important risk factors parental psychiatric illnesses and recent psychopestical events in life. Also, these results highlight diversity in the manifestations of psychiatric illnesses, and differences in causes and modes of admission between boys and girls.
