Abstract History, which is the systematic study of human activity in the past, is considered one of the most important lessons of our Curriculum, because it brings students in contact with their roots, culture and past. However, since its object concerns the historical events that took place in the past, it is taken for granted that in order for a child to fully understand History, he must first be able to understand both historical time and time concepts in general. The aim of this study is to investigate the understanding of historical time in the history course of the 4th grade through the utilization of the timeline. The research carried out involved 30 students of the 4th grade of primary school, who are studying at the 4th Elementary School of Nea Alikarnassos in Heraklion, Crete. First, the attitude and cognitive abilities of the research sample on the subject of History and the understanding of historical time were measured and then the results were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS. At the same time, the diary and the researcher's observation were used as tools of the didactic intervention, in which 15 students participated. Overall, the results of the research show that the understanding of historical time is a gradual process and students, while understanding general time concepts, face difficulties in the temporal placement of historical events and in calculating their time distances. Based on these conclusions, some suggestions are made for future research on understanding historical time.
