Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the pandemic on the daily life and emotional state of parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as well as the possible association of this impact with the variables of Stress, Anxiety and Depression. Also, a comparison of self-reports is made of parents of children with and without ASD. First, reference is made to Autism Spectrum Disorder and the effect of diagnosis on these families. Next, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the general population and then on the families of children with ASD are reported. In the context of the study of the consequences of the pandemic, a study was conducted, the results of which showed that the parents of children with ASD have been emotionally affected by the long-term effects of the pandemic. Also it was found that the long term changes in family life and the emotions that are caused from the pandemic are associated with the scales of Stress, Anxiety and Depression. The parents of children of typical development also appear to be affected by the long-term consequences of the pandemic, with no significant difference in the responses of the two groups. Differences were observed in how the changes in the daily life and emotional state of the parents are related to the scales of Stress, Anxiety and Depression.
