Abstract General: The employees of the Regional Unit (RU) of Rethymno are estimated to experience a lot of stress due to the nature of their work which is expected to affect their mental health and consequently their health-related quality of life. The present study is part of the project entitled "Empowering employees in the Regional Unit of Rethymno: A trilogy of interventions." Aim: The recording of the current state of health and the illustration of the level of stress and depression of the employees of the Regional Unit of Rethymno. Objectives: Among the objectives of the study is to investigate the factors that affect the levels of stress and depression in employees, as well as to examine whether mental disorders and especially depression are associated with perceived stress in employees. Methodology: The study was a descriptive observational study and participants were 70 employees (44 women and 26 men) aged 25-64 years working at Rethymno Regional Unit. The data collection was carried out through the anonymous questionnaire Daily, Stress, Lifestyle and Health of the Postgraduate Program "Stress science and Health Promotion" of the Medical School of the University of Athens. This questionnaire included weighted questionnaires to assess participants' health and needs such as Health Lifestyle and Personal Control Questionnaire (HLPCQ), Health Scale (HLC Scale), Stress Perception Scale (PSS 14), Spielberg Scale (STAXI), Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-13), Stress, Depression and Anxiety Scale (DASS-21) and BECK-II Depression Scale (BDI-II). The present work has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of the University of Crete. The data analysis was performed using the software program Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 25 for IBM Windows), while for the presentation of the data descriptive statistics was used. The level of statistical significance was set at 5%. Results: Several people with moderate to severe stress, as well as mild, moderate or severe depression were found. Also, statistically significant correlations were found (p <0.05) between 11 selected psychometric parameters in relation to 15 socio-demographic and occupational factors. During the single-factor correlation of perceived stress (PSS) with stress and depression rates, a statistically significant correlation was found in all tests performed (p <0.001), as well as a moderate linear correlation between PSS and DASS for stress, (r = 0.63) and depression (r = 0.65), and for BDI-II (r = 0.66). The PSS in relation to the DASS (r = 0.49) which measures stress had a slight linear correlation. Conclusions: The results of this study are broadly similar with the results of bibliography and are expected to be utilized in intervention programs in the workplace.
