Abstract The recent technological advances in the field of health in combination with the evolution of the science of medicine were accompanied by consequent increase of hospital cost. This study aimed to estimate the hospitalization costs of the neonates admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (N.I.C.U.) of the hospitals in comparison with the sum charged by the social security funds. So, a prospective study recording all the admissions of the ΝΙCU’s was realized. The cost estimation of hospitalisation begins from the birth of the infant up to its exit from the hospital and there is a distinction between the N.I.C.U.s and the units of intermediary care. The period of follow-up focuses on the admissions of infants during 14/6/2006-14/7/2006. Special research protocols were designed in which epidemiologic, clinical and economic data were recorded. Within the time period under consideration 36 infants in total were hospitalized which were classified with respect to the weight of birth and the age of gestation. In order to estimate the hospitalisation cost with accuracy the resources consumed by each infant were recorded in accordance with all types of hospital expenses. The cost analysis was realised with the use of a data base. The average length of stay of infants in hospital is 15.5 days approximately. The Average Cost Per Child is 4.418,25 € (The equivalent sum which is charged by the social security funds is 1.854,72 €).The total cost for both hospitals with regard to the follow-up period is 155145,52€. An inverse relationship between cost per child and both weight of birth and age of gestation was found in every part of the analysis. Moreover, the most important expenditures according the research concern the personnel and the cost of enteral / parenteral nutrition. The results of this study exhibit the discord between hospital pricing and reimbursement on behalf of social security funds, fact that contributes significantly to the maintenance of the deficits of public hospitals budgets. Consequently,it is believed that the adoption of a payment system which reflects the resources used based on patient grouping will offer the possibility of control and rational management of hospital resources Key -
