Abstract In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the significance of interpersonal relationships for mental well-being has become increasingly apparent. This study investigates the relationship between interpersonal trust, perceived stress, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in a population of young adults, specifically undergraduate nursing students at the Hellenic Mediterranean University. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 110 students via an online questionnaire that included demographic questions, the Personal Trust and Connections Scale (PerTC), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item (GAD-2) scale. The results indicate a connection between higher levels of interpersonal trust and lower levels of perceived stress and GAD, with age and social engagement being the linking factor in this relationship. The findings suggest that strong interpersonal trust can act as a protective factor against the psychological challenges posed by stress and anxiety, specifically in the context of academic environments. Demographic factors such as age and participation in social activities were found to have an impact on the levels of interpersonal trust. Age, academic prowess, and daily hours of sleep were found to have a connection with mental distress. This study highlights the importance of fostering interpersonal trust and social support systems within educational settings to enhance students' mental health and resilience. Further research is needed to explore these dynamics in diverse populations and to develop targeted interventions that can mitigate the negative impacts of stress and anxiety in young adults.
