Abstract The history of dentistry is long. The method used in this thesis is the bibliographic search of sources related to the subject of the study. The PubMed health sciences online database of articles and data was searched. Additionally, the digitized book repository Google Books was searched for relevant works to extract further historical evidence. Key words used were teeth, implants, dentures, orthodontics, nanotechnology and derivatives. A total of 48 articles are included in the thesis study. From the google books repository, 12 books were additionally selected based on full availability and relevance to the topic. Dentistry as an art dates back to 7000 BC with the Indus Valley civilization. At that time, the Sumerians described tooth "worms" as the cause of tooth diseases. In ancient Greece, Hippocrates, Aristotle, Dioscorides, Galen, and Archigenes wrote about dentistry, especially for the treatment of various problems, such as the treatment of toothache, loose teeth and bad breath odor. In 1723, Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon considered the Father of Modern Dentistry, published his book “Le Chirurgien Dentiste”, which for the first time defined a comprehensive system of techniques for the prevention and treatment of dental diseases. In addition, Fauchard first introduced the idea of dental fillings and the use of dental prosthesis and recognized that acids from sugar led to tooth decay. Later, in 1867, the first university dental institution was founded, the Harvard University School of Dentistry. Leafing through the history of Dentistry, it is truly inconceivable and impressive the course from ancient times, with rudimentary tools made of natural materials they had had, to the 21st century with modern dental techniques and the launch of technological evolution. Nowadays dentistry has entered Public Health Care and its interventions such as endodontic treatment, tooth replacement, extractions, implants and orthodontic treatment are completely safe and completely painless as procedures, thanks to local anesthesia and modern equipment.
