Abstract Purpose of this MSc thesis is to create a device that can be used for the assessment of circadian rhythms and sleeping disorders. It is a wrist-worn wearable battery powered device that can track the signals Accceleration(𝑚/𝑠 2 ), Gyroscope(deg/sec), Blue Light Intensity(amplitude), Ambient Light Intensity(Lux), Skin Temperature(degC), Heartrate(bpm) and Noise Level(dB SPL). It is based on an Arduino 33 BLE Sense which features a 3-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, a color sensor, a digital microphone and a brightness sensor. The blue light intensity is calculated as an approximation using the color sensor. The brightness sensor is used for the calculation of the ambient light intensity. In order to measure the body temperature, the device features an IR thermometer. The heart rate is measured from a heart rate sensor that is attached to the finger or wrist of the user. The board also features a Bluetooth Low Energy chip that is used to transmit the data measured to a custom Android application. The acceleration, gyroscope, blue and ambient light intensity as well as noise levels are transmitted every second while the transmission of the skin temperature and heart rate is performed in 1- and 5-minute intervals, respectively. The Android application can be used for live observation of the measurements but most importantly creates a log file as long as the Bluetooth connection is active. The log file is a plane .csv format that can later be used for post-processing, sleep stage identification and sleep/wake classification.
