Title Κύηση και μητρότητα στις Μεταμορφώσεις του Οβιδίου
Alternative Title Pregnancy and motherhood in the Metamorphoses of Ovid
Author Ξεκάλου, Ιωάννα
Thesis advisor Παναγιωτάκης Στέλιος
Abstract Ovid's Metamorphoses contain mythological narratives whose main theme is the transformation of men and (mainly) women. The fact that the role of the woman in the work seems to be prominent suggests that the poet himself is interested in exploring the perspective, emotions and behavior of the female gender. In this paper, five stories of pregnant women, Ius, Callistus, Semele, Alcmene and Myrrh, whose myths are found in the first, second, third, ninth and tenth books of the Metamorphoses, respectively, will be discussed and analyzed. . Intertwined with the lives of these women is violence, as they are victims of rape by a man, mortal or god. Characteristic of these episodes is, on the one hand, that the use of force and violence is considered completely legitimate by the narrator of each story, when it is practiced by superior hierarchical beings, and on the other hand that the victim becomes passivated, inactive and silent.
