Abstract

The eyelid as an external anatomical structure of the human body has been subject to surgical operations since Greek antiquity. According to ancient Greek literature, it was considered a s the protector of the eyeball which participated in vision, sleep, illness and the projection of the human character. The surgical o perations were initially simple incisions following the folds of the skin and later the trend of the tarsus. The 19th centu ry marked the beginning of modern eyelid surgery, although it was still difficult to separate benign and malignant tumors and the operations were described briefly and in some cases with gaps. Nevertheless, at the dawn of the 20th century, texts became cle ar, anatomical structures were accurately described, differential diagnosis for tumors was introduced and surgical techniques evolved in complexity. The two world wars further contributed to the development of eyelid surgery. Techniques moved away from ski n, muscle, and tarsal incisions and led to local fat conversions, use of flaps and microsurgery of muscles and tendons. This doctoral thesis deals with the issue of the evolution of eyelid surgery with the method of documentary research. With the us e of key words a) eyelid, b) surgery, c) plastic, d) blepharoplasty, e) history and f) eye and combinations and derivatives in the Hellenic, French and English languages were carried out a) survey of the electronic database of ancient Greek and Roman texts Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG), b) research of the electronic repository of written works Google Books, c) research and review of the articles in the electronic database PubMed/MedLine and d) on hand documentary research in the Health Sc iences Library of Athens. This bibliographic review attempts to record the history of eyelid surgery over the centuries and to present the most important figures who contributed to its development.
