Abstract The evolution of orthopaedics since the foundation of the Greek State This thesis deals with the evolution of Greek orthopaedics as it was integrated into Greek scientific medicine and took its first embryonic steps in the form of modern medicine, at a time that coincides with the establishment of the modern Greek state and in particular with the opening of the School of Medicine immediately after the establishment of the University of Athens, having as its starting point the scientific development of orthopaedic surgery in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Bearing in mind the above, all the ideas regarding orthopaedics as formulated by the Greek doctors of the 19th century, who in the vast majority form the first, second and third generation of Greek Professors of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens, are analyzed in detail. Specifically, it is established that these doctors, starting with Ioannis Olympios and then with great figures in surgery such as Spyridon Magginas, Pavlos Ioannou, Evangelos Kalliontzis and during the 20th century Konstantinos Mermigas, Nikolaos Alivizatos, Gerasimos Fokas, Marinos Geroulanos and from the 1930s Petros Kokkalis and Zannis Kairis laid the foundations for the formation of orthopaedics that would be taught and practiced in Greece. As medicine developed internationally, there was a gradual development of orthopaedic surgery, going beyond simple operations and reaching the point where complex operations are now performed in Greece, especially on the spine. In this context we will distinguish the scientific work of Ioannis Chrysospathis who will be dedicated almost exclusively to orthopaedics so that he will eventually be elected the first Greek Professor of Orthopaedics in Greece, as Gerasimos Fokas almost thirty years earlier had been elected Professor of Orthopaedics for children at the University of Lille. Of great importance in the work of Ioannis Chrysospathis will be the interest and promotion of orthopaedics, especially in the restoration of dystrophies and deformities, regardless of their cause, demonstrating the depth of his medical thinking, making this surgeon a pioneer in the practice of the field of orthopaedics in Greece. Besides, the progress of Greek orthopaedics, especially since the 1930s, will have a significant development so that since then Greek doctors have been studying more complex problems such as the infectious causes of orthopaedic diseases and especially the introduction of the immunological background to the study of arthropathies. After the Second World War, Greek orthopaedics will chart its course parallel to that which takes shape in the international research centers. Greek orthopaedists will now be counted among the pioneers of spine surgery, deformity correction, limb surgery and fusion of amputated limbs.
