Abstract During the past twenty years, approximately, research into educational process of reading, after the research on methods (decade '50 - '60) and scholastic maturity (decade '60 - '70), has been transferred to the field of phonological and metalinguistic functions - skills of students. The function, which is called phonological awareness, is particularly studied. The research, which is presented with this dissertation, belongs to this particular field.
The purpose of this research is, initially, to explore the relationship of functions between phonological awareness and reading; to prove the causal or non - causal character of this relationship; moreover, to evaluate phonological tasks, so as to reveal those most valuable for this process and those which can probably offer predictions of future results; to study, finally, the influence of factors - parameters such as gender, age and the subjects' order of birth, as far as the function of phonological awareness is concerned.
72 first - graders at the Latsio Primary School of the Psychico College composed the sample of the research.
The research was carried out in two critical stands. The first stand was conducted from February to March 1998 (the students in A class) and the second stand from February to March 1999 (the students in B class).
The following were used as research tools: a. A tool for the evaluation of phonological awareness. This tool consisted of ten (10) phonological tasks and one (1) task of speed of pseudword utterance and was given to the subjects orally through the process of instructed interview. b. A tool for the evaluation of reading competence. This tool consisted of thirty (30) tasks and was given to the subjects in writing.
The dissertation is divided into two parts: the theoretical part, which consists of an introduction and the first chapter and the research part, which consists of the following three chapters. In the first part the theoretical part of the study is recorded and the concerns of the study are revealed. In the second part there is a description of the research and its results. In the second chapter the research effort is analytically described through all of its stages. In the third chapter an effort to discuss and interpret the results is made and in the fourth chapter the conclusions of the research and the perspectives revealed are presented.
What comes out through the analysis of data is, initially, that there is a strong relationship between the reading process and phonological awareness and that, probably, these two skills are developed in parallel and reciprocally. Learning to read seems to be more important; possibly nothing can be stated regarding the causal character of these relationships. Phonological tasks, valuable for the process, are presented and they seem to offer predictions about future results as far as both phonological awareness and reading are concerned. Factors such as gender, age and the subjects' order of birth do not seem to influence the development of phonological awareness.
