Abstract The thesis deals with the subject of the Bronze Age pottery kilns. It includes those in the Aegean Sea (islands and Crete), as well as, in the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly and Macedonia. It also records important settlements with such structures on the coast and hinterland of Asia Minor, Anatolia and Northern Syria, in the context mainly of a comparative approach with those in the Aegean, to highlight analogies and differences that would indicate their possible relations and interactions, and any exchanges of know-how in this field of pyrotechnology. In addition to the synthesis of the overall analytical data, emphasis is placed on the early 3rd millennium B.C. pottery firing structures, and the Aegean Type I and Type II kilns of the 2nd millennium B.C., and focuses on observations on the Minoan Type III channel kiln - current hypotheses on its origin and mode of operation, and its potential relationships with Type I and Type II structures in the Aegean mainland and island. The original study and proposal for the experimental construction of a Type III kiln is incorporated herein. The spatial relationship between kilns and broader working areas for the manufacture of vases are trying to be traced, and the question of the difficult definition of a Minoan and generally Aegean prehistoric pottery workshop is thus raised. Twenty-nine Cretan kiln sites and their associated evidence, especially their architectural contexts and their portable contexts, are studied. The analogical contribution of ethnographic evidence from two traditional such sites of the previous century, one in Crete and the other in Tunisia is added to the archaeological evidence.
