Abstract In recent years, various interventions worldwide aim to increase breastfeeding rates and to support its duration. Concomitantly, mothers feel compelled to comply with experts’ recommendations and the social investment and imperative. Yet, programs, policies and infrastructure that promotes, protects and support breastfeeding are not readily available and accessible for mothers. Furthermore, the relationship of breastfeeding with mother–infant interaction needs further investigation. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the subjective experience of breastfeeding mothers in Greece and to describe how their identities as breastfeeding mothers are forged. Furthermore, it attempts to clarify the complex and bidirectional relationship between breastfeeding and the mother-infant interaction. The thesis adopts a methodological pluralism approach and it consists of two complementary studies, with a common sample of twenty breastfeeding dyads. The First Study is based on Identity Theory and investigates the experience of mothers through semi-structured interviews and diaries, subjected to Reflexive Thematic Analysis. The Second is a naturalistic observational study, which examines the spontaneous interactions of breastfeeding dyads over time and is based on video recording and microanalysis of expressive behaviours, within the framework of the Theory of Innate Intersubjectivity. The thesis has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Crete and fully complies with the relevant ethical guidelines. The findings of the first study indicate that motherhood and breastfeeding bring to the fore powerful identity changes and intense emotions. Identity verification based on efficacy and worth includes the following pathway: a) "Determined to breastfeed", b) "The road is difficult", c) " Every bit of help is appreciated" and d) " The basis and the genesis of a ‘good mother’". The findings of the second study indicate that spontaneous mother-infant interactions remain intersubjective throughout the first year and that: a) maternal positive touch to the infant and b) her tendency to remain oriented to the infant, c) reduced infant negative affect, and d) dyadic synchrony are positively associated with breastfeeding duration. The synthesis of the findings of the two studies indicates that the mother's identity is dynamically constructed and verified through the interaction both with the infant and with the wider socio-cultural context that shapes the prevailing norms. At the same time, mothers retain the ability for self-initiated action, maintaining or changing these patterns. In conclusion, breastfeeding is a genuinely inter-subjective process, so its practice and duration should not be treated as a personal responsibility of the mother. Rather, the role of the social context, the infant's own contribution and the mother's internal needs must be equally taken into account when supporting breastfeeding and breastfeeding mothers themselves individually.
