Abstract	The aims of this study were to compile a database on the clinical features of the diseases presenting with jaundice, to appreciatethe diagnostic help of each clinical feature, to calculate the diagnostic accuracy of the experimental diagnostic programme using the Bayes' mathematical formula and, finally, to attemt to answer the question "is it possible to improve the doctors' diagnostic accuracy after their participation in the study?" The items from 221 jaundiced patients who were admited in our Hospital, between 1/1/90 and 31/1/92, were collected and recorded in common proforma with agreed terminology and definitions by the initial investigator.The initial and final diagnosis were also noted. The forms were processed in Galway Ireland where the computing base was and the items of each patient were analysed by the diagnostic programme.The analysis of the items proved that there were no clinically useful features for some of the possible diseases, e.g. cholelithiasis and acute viral hepatitis and that, in cases, the programme's diagnostic accuracy was better than the doctors' one. On the contrary, the doctors' diagnostic accuracy was better for the diseases in their entirety (77% versus 71%).Finally, we noticed that in the course of the study as the number of patients increased, the doctors' diagnostic accuracy was imroved.
