Abstract This thesis studies the reception of Arthur Rimbaud in literary criticism and Modern Greek literature, particularly in the inter-war poetry. The primary focus is on the generation of post-symbolist poets of 1920, a period which marks the first stage of the reception of the French poet in Greece at a collective level. Three aspects of Arthur Rimbaud’s reception in Greece from 1894 to 1954 are addressed: First, Critical Publications on Rimbaud; second, Translations of Rimbaud into Greek (Since Rimbaud’s works are so vast, the translations are limited to three poems: “Le Dormeur du Val”, “Sensation” and “Voyelles”); and, finally, Rimbaud’s Influence on poetic creation in Greece including a comparative and intertextual analysis of poems from a thematic and socio-critical lens. This study presents for the first time in France a global image of the reception of Rimbaud in modern Greek literature of the first half of the 20th century and reflects the debates within French criticism, including an assessment of Rimbaud’s role in the Greek literary evolution of the interwar period. A new vision of the reception of Rimbaud in Greece is proposed and offers a new appreciation of Greek rimbaldism. The approach of this research does not seek to highlight the errors of critics nor to establish an objective interpretative truth, if such a truth can exist, but to bring out different perspectives and a plurality of "truths", by showing how Rimbaud’s work has nourished modern Greek poetry. Rimbaud plays an important transitional role, and accompanies the transition to the modernist generation of 1930.
