Abstract

The ontogeny of Dentex dentex was studied from fertilisation to the juvenile stage. During the exotrophic phase the study was performed comparatively under extensive and semi-extensive rearing conditions. It included the development of morphology, pigmentation, allometric growth of the body, behaviour, growth and scales. Additionally, the morpho-anatomical abnormalities which were presented during the rearing trials were recorded and studied in relation to their development, their effects on the morphology of the individuals, and the effects of rearing conditions on them. The development of D. dentex can be seriously affected by the rearing conditions applied during the early exogenous phase, in respect to the allometric growth of the fish, as well as in respect to the development of morphological abnormalities and osteological deformities. The results are discussed in respect to their use in the elimination of osteological deformities and in the establishment of D. dentex rearing. The combination of the study of the functional morphology with the different rearing conditions was the main tool used for the determination of the basic requirements, possible limiting factors, advantages and problems in the rearing of D. dentex.
