Abstract

This work studies the problem of ontology evolution under the prism of belief change. After we examine the various aspects of the problem of ontology change and the various research fields related to this multifaceted problem, we will focus on the subproblem of ontology evolution, presenting current research on this issue. We will explain how work performed in the field of belief change can be applied to ontology evolution, complementing current research in addressing the most important problems that are currently faced by ontology evolution researchers. Following that, we will apply our methodology, by studying how the most influential belief change theory, the AGM theory, can be applied to a class of logics more general than the one for which it had been originally designed. This generalization will allow us to determine the applicability of the AGM theory in logics used for the representation of ontologies, such as Description Logics (DLs) and OWL (Web Ontology Language), and, consequently, the applicability of the theory in the problem of ontology evolution.
