Abstract Executive functions (EFs) are higher order, goal - directed, cognitive processes that improve rapidly during middle childhood (Burgess & Simons 2005), influenced by parental behaviours (Valcan et al., 2018). Perceived parental rejection in particular influences self determination and the sense of self (Rohner, 2017). Awareness of the world and self is an important component for action (Tsakiris et al., 2005) and becomes possible for children through the representation of experience on a cognitive map that is perceived through the perspective of their parents. Since children's “perceptual range” is limited to others' interpretations of themselves (Zadra & Clore, 2011), and self-concept is inextricably linked to intentional action, it is possible that a confused sense of self and low self-concept may direct children's attention to negative emotional states that disorient their action (Stright et al., 2008). When negative self-evaluation intrudes on the conceptual schema for the self, motivation is reduced and success seems more out of reach (Eitam & Higgins, 2014). This study with a sample of 177 participants (86 boys and 91 girls) primary school students, investigated the possible correlation between perceived parental acceptance – rejection, children’s’ EFs and their action-representation. Perceived parental rejection was assessed through the Parental Acceptance/Rejection Questionnaire, cognitive flexibility through the Shape Trailing test, and inhibitory control through the Go/No-Go test. Action - representation was investigated with a hypothetical scenario starting with an “if” question. Results indicate that perceived parental rejection is associated with decreased executive functions, but perceived maternal hostility was associated with increased cognitive flexibility. Furthermore, perceived parental rejection was found to be a risk predictor and action orientation a protective factor for children’s’ executive control.
