Abstract

The dominant thesis about the role of the touristic sector is to contribute to the Gross National Product (GNP), to reduce the deficit of the equilibrium of disbursals, to improve the living standard of the local population, to create job positions, to insure funds for new investments and last but not least, to ameliorate and augment the country’s infrastructure. On the contrary, tourism and especially massive tourism can affect negatively the host country, because it disturbs the everyday life of the resident citizens, it alienates the social institutions and has a rapidly expanded environmental footprint. The question that arises is whether the touristic sector has a direct and positive effect on the national economy or if its damages and losses redound critically on the final outcome. The answer on this issue is attempted to be given by conveying this inquiry in the local area of the Municipality of Rethimnon. The data that are collected and examined are about the municipality revenue from the touristic sector compared to the rest of the revenues, in order to feature the touristic sector’s proportion of contribution. The inferences that are drawn are immensely interesting, considering that the data advocate the estimation that the touristic sector contributes substantially to the municipal revenue, while they establish evidence of its inadequacies.
