Abstract |
Mesalina is a widespread Lacertid genus occuring throughout North Africa and Middle East. It has been through a series of taxonomic revisions, but the phylogenetic relationships among the species remain unclear. Curently it is considered to comprise 14 species. Previous studies based on morphological characters suggest that two of the widespread species of the genus (M. guttulata and M. brevirostris) may represent species complexes. While according to molecular data those statements proved to be correct. M. guttulata with respect to M. bahaeldini turned out to be paraphyletic and M. brevirostris polytypic or even species complex. Those findings imply that the morphological variation so far believed to be intraspecific may actually reflect interspecific differences. This new knowledge lead us to believe that the inference of phylogenetic relationships based on molecular data, can help us further understand the relationships between the species of the genus and reconsider their taxonomic status. The main goal of this study is to explore the phylogenetic relationships between 11 species of the genus based on two mitochondrial genes 16S rRNA and Cytochrome b. New localities of the distribution of M. guttulata and M. brevirostris are added to the dataset, in order to estimate more accurately the species phylogenies while the taxonomic validity of the other species included is investigated.
