Abstract |
Recently a plethora of optical beams with non-trivial amplitude and phase distributions
have been introduced. In a collection containing only the, classical now, Bessel beams an
increasing number of new members like the Airy and the radially symmetrical Airy,
Mathieu and Weber beams have been added.
These novel optical beams propagate in curved trajectories and resist to diffraction or
dispersion. Therefore, they are able to self-heal and bypass obstacles, advantages that
make them exciting for applications ranging from materials processing to
telecommunications.
This thesis focuses on design techniques for tailoring these novel optical beams to
control their propagation dynamics and their focal volume. In our analysis we have
combined analytical estimations and numerical propagation simulations to reach at
predictions of the beam propagation properties. Furthermore, through our unified
description approach we have merged two autofocusing ring Airy beam types under the
same family. Interestingly, at the boundary parameter regime these beams are transformed
to the well-known Gaussian and Bessel beams.
Our results will have an important impact to laser applications that require a control of
the focal region properties. Such applications include among others, laser materials
processing, two photon polymerization, laser surgery, optical telecommunications,
harmonic generation, and Thz generation.
